Udawalawe National Park Safari

If someone asked you to name a Sri Lanka day tour that reliably delivers – that gives you a proper wildlife encounter, outdoors, in genuinely beautiful surroundings, with a high probability of memorable sightings – Udawalawe would be a very strong answer. The elephant population here is extraordinary in size and accessibility, and the open savanna landscape means you actually get to watch them rather than glimpsing grey shapes between trees.

Highlights

– Wild Asian Elephant Herds

Around 500 to 700 elephants live permanently within Udawalawe National Park, and the open grassland landscape gives you unobstructed views of herds in motion – crossing roads at close range, bathing at the reservoir edge, or grazing in the morning light in groups of twenty or thirty. Watching a matriarch lead a herd with small calves tucked in close is one of those wildlife encounters that people remember and describe in detail years later.

– Elephant Transit Home

Adjacent to the park, the Elephant Transit Home is a government rehabilitation facility for orphaned elephant calves rescued from across the island. The daily milk feeds – where eight or ten calves charge the milk truck with competitive enthusiasm and drink from enormous bottles – is one of the most purely enjoyable and emotionally uncomplicated wildlife experiences in Sri Lanka. It’s not a zoo. It’s a working conservation programme, and the animals here will eventually be released back into Udawalawe.

– Open Grassland Birdlife

Udawalawe’s grassland and reservoir ecosystem supports an outstanding community of waterbirds – painted storks, open-billed storks, purple herons, and the enormous lesser adjutant stork are reliable sightings, alongside water buffalo, spotted deer, and the occasional leopard for those who stay alert. The park’s open character gives birdwatching a quality of visibility that the more jungle-dense parks can’t always match.
