Whale & Dolphin Watching – Mirissa

The waters off Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s southern coast are among the best whale-watching grounds in the world. Between November and April, blue whales – the largest animals that have ever lived on this planet – pass through in numbers that make sightings a regular occurrence rather than a lucky one. This is not a simulated wildlife encounter. It’s the real thing, in the open ocean, before breakfast.

Highlights

– Blue Whale Encounters

The blue whale’s sheer physical scale is something that photographs genuinely fail to communicate – the slow, enormous roll of the back above the surface, the explosion of the blow rising several metres into the air, the casual power of the flukes as the animal dives. Mirissa’s position above the deep-water continental shelf that blue whales follow on their migration makes sightings reliably frequent between November and April, with some mornings delivering multiple encounters.

– Spinner Dolphins

The pods of spinner dolphins that ride the bow waves of the whale-watching boats off Mirissa are famously acrobatic – spinning multiple full rotations on a single leap out of the water – and their sheer energy and apparent delight in the boats’ presence makes every encounter an event. Encounters with pods of hundreds of individuals, leaping simultaneously in every direction, are among the most joyful wildlife experiences available anywhere in Sri Lanka.

– Mirissa Bay & Coconut Tree Hill

Mirissa itself is a beautiful and relaxed south coast bay – Coconut Tree Hill’s photogenic palm-crowned headland above the curved beach, the warm water, the beachside cafes, and the easy atmosphere of a town that manages to be simultaneously active and laid-back. An afternoon here after a morning at sea makes for one of the south coast’s most naturally satisfying full days.
