An introduction to Colombo’s contemporary creative culture – the independent galleries, the design boutiques, the restored heritage buildings now occupied by creative enterprises, and the particular energy of a city that is producing interesting visual art for the first time in its modern history.

Day 02

Sigiriya Drive & Artisan Workshop Afternoon

The drive to Sigiriya through rural Sri Lanka, arriving for an afternoon visit to local artisan workshops in the Cultural Triangle – batik-making, wood carving, and the traditional crafts of the north-central region introduced by the people who actually make them.

Day 03

Sigiriya Rock Fortress - The Ancient Artist's Perspective

The morning ascent of Sigiriya is reframed through the lens of its artistic heritage – the Sigiriya Damsels fresco paintings, among the finest works of ancient Sri Lankan art, the mirror wall’s centuries of inscribed poetry, and the formal water gardens as an example of ancient landscape design.

Day 04

Kandy - Traditional Arts & Kandyan Cultural Performance

The drive to Kandy for a guided morning visit to workshops producing traditional Kandyan crafts – brassware, lacquerwork, silver jewellery, and handloom textiles – followed by the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and an evening Kandyan cultural dance performance that showcases the performing arts tradition in its full theatrical form.

The drive through the tea country includes visits to craft workshops in the highland villages – the particular weaving traditions of the hill country and the traditional craft practices that have survived in the cooler climate communities of the central highlands.

Scenic Train to Ella - Railway as Cultural Artefact

The hill country train journey through the most beautiful railway landscape in Asia, arriving in Ella for an afternoon in the village’s growing creative scene.

Day 07

Galle Fort - Contemporary Art, Craft & Creative Spaces

The drive to Galle and an afternoon in the Fort’s remarkable concentration of galleries, boutique studios, artisan workshops, and creative spaces – one of the finest places in South Asia to engage with both traditional crafts and contemporary Sri Lankan visual art within a single UNESCO-listed urban environment.

Day 08

Galle Fort Continued - Art Walks & Optional Coastal Craft

A second Galle Fort day for deeper engagement with the galleries and creative spaces encountered yesterday, plus optional excursions to cinnamon plantations or coastal craft communities in the surrounding area.

Day 09

Colombo Return - Design Stores & Cultural Spaces

The Southern Expressway return to Colombo for a final afternoon in the capital’s most interesting design stores, galleries, and cultural spaces.

Day 10

Colombo Final Day - Creative Exploration & Shopping

A full final day in Colombo for those who want to spend it properly – the full range of the city’s creative retail and gallery landscape.
